Nothing To Undo

May 17, 2019 by Sondra Robinson

Years ago there was a situation in my life that was very stressful and involved a lot of lies and deceit. Most people involved either could not, or would not, see the truth. For a while I took more than my share of the responsibility for what happened, primarily because I just did not understand the issue or the dynamics involved. The whole experience left me confused and wondering if I was in the right place after all. Turns out, I was in the right place at the right time with the right people. The experience left me stronger, more compassionate, with better boundaries and a much better ability to listen to the actions of others, especially when those actions do not align with their words. The situation and the people involved were there as teachers so I could get these lessons and many more.

One day, as I was trying to make sense of everything that had happened, I picked up my phone and there on the screen was a message saying “Nothing to undo.” I was not in the middle of any process on my phone and to this day I have not ever seen that message in that font again on my phone. I took it as confirmation that there was not anything I could do to undo what I had not done. That experience inspired this poem.

Have you ever been
In a situation
That was not of
Your creation?
You were just being
And that was a trigger
For other’s insecurities
Making them bigger.

You may struggle
And wonder
What could you do?
But perhaps it is
Not about you.

If their pain is too deep
They may lie and deceive
You can walk away
With a sigh of relief
Knowing there is
Nothing to undo,
You were just being you.
